Get Verbal Feedback from Students to Boost Their Engagement

Feedback is an essential part of communication. If there is no feedback, communication will not be effective. Its reason is that feedback tells us either our message is delivered in an effective way or not. Feedback is also helpful for teachers and students to strengthen the learning process. There are different kinds of feedbacks like sandwich feedback, self and peer assessment and verbal feedback etc. The involvement of voice, body language and facial expressions to get feedback are known as verbal feedback. Here, we will discuss how verbal feedback will boost up the engagement of students.

Learn how to ask the right questions

It is discovered that if teachers are trying to get feedback from students in written form, it is useless for them. Its reason is that most of the students don’t like to fill the forms and there are also some students who fill the forms quickly because they think that there is no importance of their views about the teachers. Under such situation, if teachers want to get feedback from students in order to boost up their engagement, they should ask the right questions from them. Its reason is that by asking the right questions from students, teachers will try to provide possible answers to these questions. At the end of the course, students should try to ask questions about particular aspects of the course, they can also ask some questions about some individual lessons, they can ask questions about impact of the assignment on their learning process, they can also ask some questions about their instructional styles and they can also ask some questions about broader aspects of the course.

Focus group

As we know that in the marketing field, there are great importance of consumer’s impressions and opinions. In a similar way, in the field of education, there is also great importance of student’s impressions and opinions. These kinds of opinions and impressions of students matter a lot when you are going to access a particular course of study. For example, if you are going to start a new semester and students have chance to choose one course among two or more than two courses, you should try to get opinions and impressions of the students rather than making your own decision. Its reason is that if you select a particular course for your students and there is a possibility that this course will not be interesting for students, you will not be able to engage the students. On the other hand, if you allow the students to select courses according to their own choices, it is easy for you to engage students in the teaching-learning process.

Anonymous notes

The anonymous note is also known as a suggestion box. It is a fact that most students don’t try to provide suggestions to their teachers directly. Under such situation, if teachers want to get real suggestions from the students, they should allow them to send them anonymous notes. For this reason, they should set a place where students can send anonymous notes to them. As a teacher, you should also ask your students that your aim is to make your lectures engaging and intriguing and for this reason, you require their suggestions. In these suggestions, they can share the strengths and weaknesses of your lessons and they can also provide them with some suggestions about improvements in the teaching method.

Online surveys

There are also some students who can find new techniques and strategies to engage their students in the class by conducting online surveys. For this reason, teachers should try to conduct online surveys before studying the course. In these surveys, students can get suggestions from the respondents about classroom decoration and possible activities that will be helpful for them to engage their students. Teachers can also get an idea about the best teaching method by conducting these online surveys. It is also easy for students to get an idea about the best teaching tools to engage students in the class.

Combine open and close-ended questions

While getting feedback from students, teachers can ask both close-ended as well as open-ended questions. If you want to get the best suggestions of the students, you should combine open-ended and close-ended questions. Its reason is that close-ended questions are helpful in some aspects but there are also some aspects in which close-ended questions don’t work. In these aspects, you will have to ask open-ended questions from the respondents. Its reason is that open-ended questions allow the students to discuss their point of views.
